Defending the World, Fighting the Firenation, bringing peace to the world as the Avatar
Over a hundred years
Avatar Aang is an Air nomad and was the Avatar during the Hundred Years War with the Fire Nation. As the Avatar, Aang is the only one during his lifetime to master all of the four bending arts. As the Avatar, Aang was tasked with maintaning balance in the world, and in his lifetime this meant putting an end to the war brought upon the world by the Fire Nation. At the start of the war, Firelord Sozin ordered an attack on the Air Nomads, and commited mass genocide, of which Aang unknowingly escaped before being caught in a storm. Entering the Avatar State, he froze his Sky Bison ,Appa, in ice. Aang remained frozen for one hundred years before being awakened by Katara and her brother, Sokka. Katara was a waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe along with her brother, who was the oldest male left in the village after all of the men went off to fight the war. In the hundred years that Aang and Appa were frozen, the Fire Nation had nearly defeated all the other nations and Aang and his new friends set out to save the world.
Aang, as the avatar, trained in the four elements in his travels to defeat the fire nation. As an air nomad Aang was already adept at Airbending. Learning Waterbending from Katara and Pakku at the Northern Water tribe. Along his travels Aang met Toph , who taught him Earthbending, which proved to be the hardest element for Aang to learn. Later he learned Firebending from his former enemy Zuko, after already having learned a small amount from the Firebending master Jeong Jeong.
