If any of you scrolled up in admin chat on the discord, you may have noticed a small spat where the sysops here were freaking out about some stuff that's been going on on other wikis, with myself even mentioning how I was considering leaving FANDOM altogether.
Well, this post is to clarify some things, and to also make sure our user-base is aware of how FANDOM is operating in regards towards the words we speak. While I might not agree with how the site our wiki operates on is doing things, this is the law of the land, and as a site that also hosts "Who would win?" type debates, things can often get heated here, and some unintentional things can be said.
Frankly, FANDOM is beginning to ban/permaban users and administrators wholesale based on the use of racial slurs, and a list of derogatory terms I am personally not aware of.
What is to note, however, is that FANDOM doesn't believe in context. Whether you are using these terms to explain a historical fact or are using them as evidence to help ban another user - you can be targeted and banned. This is what they had to say on the matter:
"Distributing any slur words on our network - ones that are known to be used to spread hate towards groups of people based on their racial, religious, or sexual orientation identities - will result in a global block. End of story - there is no context we permit these words to be used in conversation.”
There is also a list of terms they have claimed that they are targeting specifically for bans:
"
- A word that starts with N that is racial in nature.
- A word that starts with C that originated as a crass term on female genitalia
- A word that starts with F that refers to someone of a specific sexual orientation.
- A word that starts with C that is often used to insult men who support feminism
These are not the only words we will find offensive - remember the Terms of Use states we will ban users based upon words that slur any number of classes of people. "
However do note that this list is still open, and ultimately whether or not what you say meets the context of their terms and services is decidedly up to FANDOM Staff.
I understand not much of this has hit this wiki, however I have noticed this is becoming a more and more prevalent issue on debating websites like ours. Take this as a warning to everyone here, please try and keep yourselves from typing anything that may fall under these guidelines, however admittedly the disregard for context and the open-ended statement they gave ultimately mean there can and will be bans coming to this wiki under these rules. We also don't really highlight threads here, so I hope this announcement isn't too unwelcome.
Thank you.
