| “ | From Gaia and from Ouranos these others also came-three huge and mighty children, whom one even dreads to name: Kottos, Briareos, Gyges-haughty sonswith monstrous forms; for from their shoulder each of them sprouted a hundred arms, and from each sturdy shoulder fifty heads, ungainly, grew and sat upon his massive limbs, and each one of this crew had endless strength of body in his huge, misshapen girth.

In the distant eons the earth Goddes Gaia married her son, the starry sky god Ouranos, together creating three races of supernatural giants: the Titans, the promordial Cyclopses, and the Hekatonkhires, the hundred handed fifty headed giants, gods of Hurricanes. Ouranos feared these three races of giants, and locked them back into the womb of Gaia, the inner earth. In Tartarus he had the hundred handed guarded by the monster Campe, who kept them at bay until Zeus arrived eons later. Having slain the beast, Zeus set the hundred handed free, and they in turn vowed to serve him. Stronger than any of the Titans, they hurled great trees and stones onto their enemies, who where eventually defeated. Despite their gratitude for being freed by Zeus from the underworld, they chose to return, to guard the fallen Titans in their new home, Tartarus. These beings where so physically strong and supernaturally powerful that the gods feared them, so much so that they where used by Zeus as his personal bodyguard!
