The term "staff" refers to a simple wooden rod. In real life, staffs have been used as weapons in East Asian cultures including China and Japan. Staves were also used for training purposes in Europe, such as the quarterstaff.

In fictionEdit

In works of fiction of the fantasy genre, Staffs or staves are a common magical focus. In works of fiction where both staves and smaller wands are used, staves sometimes allow a wizard to channel and direct their magic with more efficiency and control, with magical communities viewing it as something akin to an M249. They are usually wooden staffs, long pieces of wood engraved with runes.
